1. Who is Karah Skinner? Where is she located and what are her ties to Alabama and her passions?
I’m Karah Skinner, a content creator, social media marketer and family recipe blogger born and raised here in Alabama. I’m passionate about Alabama agriculture, helping others share their story through social media and sharing how cooking for your family creates connection to food and each other.
I’ve been married to my husband (Kaleb) for 17 years, and together we’re raising our children (5 here with us and one in heaven). We run a South Poll cattle farm and I’m actively involved in agriculture advocacy through the Alabama Farmers Federation. I love Alabama farmers, locally grown products and sharing simple, real meals with my family. I homeschool our children and enjoy sharing our food, farm life and everyday moments on social media.
2. How did you begin your social media journey?
I started my social media journey about 10 years ago when my family and I began our path as first-generation farmers. We were selling our meat directly to consumers, and I created a social media page simply to share our products and connect with customers. Before long, people started messaging me asking how to cook what they were buying, which naturally led me to start sharing recipes.
Over the years, my content has grown right along with my followers. Today, I share a mix of recipes, farm life, fashion, and the everyday things I enjoy. What started as a way to support our farm has turned into a space where I can connect, encourage, and share real life—and that’s been the most rewarding part of the journey.
3. What is your all time favorite meal?
Y’all, picking just one favorite meal is impossible, I love food way too much! If I had to choose, it’d be a big ol’ buffet with pastas, fresh breads, Asian dishes, dips and anything else that looks too good to pass up. Give me a little bit of everything, and I’m a happy girl!
4. What drives you to promote your community and local products?
I love promoting my community and local products because of the people who want to learn more about where their food comes from. Over the years, I’ve connected with so many folks who don’t have an agricultural background or may live in a rural area but are genuinely curious about farming, food and cooking. That’s what I love about social media, being able to share what I know with people who really want to learn. I also love to help them find the best products while encouraging them to support the farmers that produce them in the process.
5. Where is your favorite spot in Alabama?
Alabama is one of the most unique states in the country, the Alabama Wildlife Federation ranks it 4th for biodiversity in the U.S., and ranks 1st east of the Mississippi. That makes our state an incredible place to explore and a special place worth protecting. I’ve traveled from the far north all the way to the Gulf Coast, and while I love seeing everything Alabama has to offer, nothing beats my home and my farm—that’s where I feel most connected to this amazing state.
6. If you had to pick one of the following to keep, which would you choose and why? Local tomatoes, local pecans or local okra?
That’s a tough one because I need all three in order to cook the dishes that I LOVE and that bring back so many childhood memories. We’re lucky to have producers for all three close by, and I truly enjoy them all. But if I had to pick just one, it would definitely be tomatoes. I use them multiple times a week, all year long, and they’re a staple in so many of my favorite meals!
