Nourishing Our Village

Nourishing Our Village

Nourish, AL

Across the state of Alabama, 1 in 4 children are considered food insecure. In other words, these children have limited access to healthy and nutritious food items.

Nourish, AL was conceptualized in 2016 by pediatrician Dr. Katie Wolter and local farmer Beth Hornsby. This program provides families with a weekly delivery basket that contains an average of 30 pounds of fresh, locally-sourced fruits and vegetables. Families are paired with community partners that agree to deliver produce boxes each week in order to eliminate transportation as a barrier to food security. Inspired by a shared passion for meeting the needs of underserved populations in Lee County, the pair co-founded The Nourish Foundation in 2018 in order to address food insecurity in the community and promote a holistic approach to wellness.

To further meet the needs of these children and families, Nourish Wellness was launched by Dr. Katie Wolter in 2022. This initiative provides further care through a multidisciplinary pediatric wellness program for children who are at risk for or have been diagnosed with lifestyle illnesses such as obesity, hypertension, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes. Prior to the launch of Nourish Wellness, 11 families were recipients of fresh produce boxes through Nourish, AL. There are now 24 families that not only receive fresh produce on a weekly basis, but also wellness care!

As The Nourish Foundation continues to grow in its reach and impact, we are continually grateful for the support and encouragement we have received from community members and sponsors.

This holiday season, we have an opportunity for you to give the gift of providing fresh produce to families in need, through our partnership with Sweet Grown Alabama! You can sponsor a family for one, three or six months to receive a box of fresh produce each week in honor of your friends or family members! To learn more, you can check out our website.
