Meet Laura Jean McCurdy, Sweet Grown Alabama Communications Specialist

Meet Laura Jean McCurdy, Sweet Grown Alabama Communications Specialist

Sweet Grown Alabama would like to welcome our new part-time communications specialist, Laura Jean McCurdy.

As communications specialist, McCurdy will assist with website updates, newsletter and blog content, social media, event booths, speaking engagements and other special projects.

“I am thrilled to have Laura Jean join the Sweet Grown Alabama team,” said Sweet Grown Alabama Director Ellie Watson. “With her help, we will be able to take Sweet Grown Alabama programming to the next level. I can’t wait for you all to meet Laura Jean and begin to see her hard work increase the reach of Sweet Grown Alabama.”

McCurdy grew up on McCurdy & Sons Farm in Lowndes County with her parents, Garrett and Rachel, and two brothers, Frazer and Mason. The family farm, started by her grandfather, consists of over 100 head of Brangus and Charolais cattle, row crops, and broiler poultry houses. Some of McCurdy’s greatest childhood memories involve spending time on the farm, from picking corn to working cows to driving tractors. She says, “Every day on the farm was and is a new adventure.”

After high school, McCurdy pursued an agricultural communications degree at Auburn University.

“I chose this major because of my involvement and background in agriculture,” said McCurdy. “I wanted to communicate the vital role of farmers and agriculture to the public.”

She graduated from Auburn in May 2020 and began working as the communications specialist at the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries. Because of the close working relationship with the Department of Agriculture as a Founding Member of Sweet Grown Alabama, McCurdy began assisting with Sweet Grown Alabama projects in addition to her Department duties. In January 2021, she officially stepped into her role as communications specialist for Sweet Grown Alabama.
