The Wadley Farmers Market is a proud member of the state's new agricultural branding program, Sweet Grown Alabama. Open every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., Wadley Farmers Market sells local produce to provide access to fresh food for the small town’s residents.
“Being a Sweet Grown member emphasizes locally-grown produce,” says market manager Marcia Houze. “Many people still do not understand the difference between buying produce grown in other states or countries and buying locally-grown produce. Being a Sweet Grown member showcases our little market all over the state.”
Wadley Farmers Market began in 2018. This year it is the only farmers market in Randolph County. Wadley Farmers Market is trying to expand to provide different varieties of produce to locals as well as trying to add more vendors to the market.
“The Town of Wadley Farmers Market is a great place to find locally-grown products right in your community,” said Sweet Grown Alabama Director Ellie Watson. “At the market, you can meet the person who grew your products, and ask them how and why they grow using certain methods. It allows you to have confidence in your food and other agricultural products.”
Sweet Grown Alabama exists to connect Alabama farmers and families. The non-profit foundation helps farmers promote their products through a convenient online searchable database. Consumers can locate Sweet Grown Alabama farmers in their area by searching the database via zip code or by product.
“It looks like it will be a good year for the farmers and the customers,” says Houze.
Wadley Farmers Market is located at 265 Highland Avenue. The market is open every Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. until September 17. To learn more about Wadley Farmers Market, visit their Facebook page at Facebook.com/wadleyfarmersmarket.
